Hour Types in Kantata OX

Overview

Kantata OX offers a variety of hour types, all of which are directly related to a resource, a project, or both. These hour types include allocated hours, scheduled hours, and estimated hours. This article will explore where each type is found and how each type is used.

Allocated Hours

Allocated hours are entered and managed in the Resource Center. They are defined as how much a resource is “planned” or “allowed” to work on a project based on who’s available and/or most capable of performing the work. Allocated hours are defined at the project-level, as opposed to estimated and scheduled hours, which are defined at the task- or resource-level.

Allocated hours have two states: soft and hard.

  • Soft allocations represent tentative, in flux “hours” that act as penciled in placeholders.
  • Hard allocations represent confirmed or booked hours on a project.

You can see allocated hours in the following areas of Kantata OX:

  • From the Resourcing tab of an individual project, represented by a thin, solid blue line.

  • In the Resource Center, allocated hours are represented by solid or striped colored bars on the timeline; click here for more information.

Scheduled Hours

Scheduled hours are entered on each task assigned to a resource within a project. They are defined as the number of hours a resource is scheduled to spend on each task for that project. Scheduled hours are defined at the task- or resource-level, as opposed to allocated hours, which are defined at the project-level.

You can see user scheduled hours in the following areas of Kantata OX:

  • From the Resourcing tab of an individual project. By default, only a team member with Project Financials (or higher) can enter hours here; click here to learn more.

Task Estimated Hours

Task estimate hours are a measurement of effort in time for how long a task in its entirety will take to complete. When tracking time on a project task (or any of its subtasks), you can use the Task Progress view in the Task Tracker to see the current burn rate in the Est. Hours column. We generally recommend the Task Progress view for adding and viewing estimated hours (if not added via template).
